It can start with a missed rent payment, a rental increase, job loss, or an unexpected hardship. This Homelessness Week, we want to shine a light on the real stories behind the statistics, helping everyone better understand and support those facing homelessness and hardship. With more Australians forced into these difficult situations, your support is crucial to help us be there for those who need us most. Help someone like Aaron feel seen and supported “Homelessness – you never think it’s going to happen to you, but it could any day.” Meet Aaron. Just last year, he was a managing supervisor. Then a series of unfortunate events changed everything, and he found himself sleeping rough. “For me it was first moral denial. I didn’t want to think I was basically homeless.” Without stable housing, even laundry became unaffordable. That’s where Orange Sky stepped in, offering free washing, drying, and – most importantly – connection. “Without you guys, I would’ve been lugging it up to the laundromat… I don’t have that $30. I t’s good just to have someone to talk to… Just different conversations. Just a friendly space, a smile.” Aaron’s story reminds us how quickly life can change – and how powerful your support can be. Donate now Help volunteers like Donna be there when it counts When we yarn with long-time volunteers like Donna, we’re reminded that homelessness can happen to anyone. “What I learn again and again and again is how a simple change in life, a simple curve ball or a string of circumstances… can really take you into a place that we don’t expect.” Donna has met countless people who never imagined they’d be in crisis – like a qualified woman who lost her job, ran out of savings, and was sleeping rough while still attending job interviews. “She didn’t have accommodation and yet she was turning up to job interviews that week. I mean, what a woman, how amazing.” For Donna and the friends she meets, it’s often the moments of connection that matter the most. “There’s safety and a no judgement policy… They’re made to feel like they’re part of something… it’s like a reunion every shift.” Today, your support can bring essential services and hope to those in need. Donate now Types of homelessness – beyond sleeping rough We’ve surveyed hundreds of Aussies and there’s a huge gap in the community’s understanding of homelessness, and what we’re seeing on the ground. Hearing the real, human stories from people with lived experience is one of the ways we can better understand the challenges and circumstances faced by those doing it tough. Chances are you’ve seen what homelessness looks like on your commute to work or on a night out. But have you thought about what it looks like beyond someone sleeping rough? The stats might surprise you. What we know 122k+ people experiencing homelessness in Australia 23% of Australians experiencing homelessness are aged 12-24 26.1% of all Australians are feeling persistently lonely 44% of Australians are experiencing financial hardship Ready to learn more about homelessness? You are very welcome to make a donation to Orange Sky by direct deposit to our bank account. Please call us on (07) 3067 5800 or email hello@orangesky.org to obtain our BSB and account number. We will generate a one-time individual reference number for you to use with your deposit so that we can easily identify your donation and forward a receipt. Can I donate physical goods such as clothes, blankets, laundry detergent or shampoo? Thank you so much for thinking of us for your kind donation! Unfortunately, due to our current capacity and resources, we are not able to accept, handle, or pass on donations of physical goods to our friends. We recommend getting in touch with another service provider in your area who may be better placed to store, sort and distribute items to people in need. You can also try searching Ask Izzy for local service providers. Can I direct my donation to a particular area or service? All donations help us provide clean clothes, warm showers, and genuine conversation to those doing it tough. While most of our support is managed centrally to maximise efficiency, we can provide information on specific expenses related to the service area you’re interested in to show the impact of your donation. Please contact us at hello@orangesky.org to discuss this further. Is my donation tax-deductible? Orange Sky has the status of a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR), and any gift of money or property to Orange Sky over the value of $2 is tax-deductible in Australia. Want to chat?
