Why I Started BG Fit

As told by Brodie Germaine · Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia

I started BG Fit because I saw too many of our mob going through the justice system and not getting the support they needed. Growing up in Mount Isa, I saw what happened when young fellas had nothing to do — they'd get into trouble. But when they had sport, when they had something to work towards, everything changed.

I played rugby league at a high level and I know what sport can do for young people. It's not just about fitness — it's about discipline, respect, turning up when you said you would. These are the things that keep our mob strong.

We started with just a gym session on Tuesdays at the PCYC. Five kids turned up the first week. Now we've got 15-20 regulars and the word is spreading. The parents are seeing changes in their kids — better behaviour at school, more confidence, showing up on time.

The goal was never just fitness. It's about creating a pathway. Some of these kids have never had anyone believe in them before. When you show up every week and you're there for them, that means something. That's what BG Fit is about.

Brodie Germaine

Pita Pita Wakai · Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia

Brodie is, in his own words, a proud Pita Pita Wakai man from Mount Isa on Kalkadoon country. His grandmother is from Boulia and his grandfather from Katherine.
