Growing up, Goonyun spent his early years in Townsville and later moved to Brisbane at the age of sixteen. "I left all my friends behind," he reflects, capturing the bittersweet nature of his transition. Despite the move, Palm Island’s essence remained ever-present in his life.

Goonyun’s connection to Palm Island is palpable. "Even when I go fishing, you know, you just feel more at home," he says. The act of touching the water and sand brings an unparalleled sense of belonging, a feeling deeply intertwined with family and community roots. His work at the PCYC, where he engages with younger kids, is a testament to his dedication to the community. Although he initially doubted his ability to work with children, believing his place was "always in the kitchen," Goonyun has embraced this role. He acknowledges the challenges, noting that the kids "get on your nerves sometimes," yet his commitment is unwavering.

His resilience was further tested during the floods in Townsville. "I didn’t know what was gonna hit until I got stuck in there," he recalls, describing the chaos and uncertainty of the experience. The disruption of communication with Palm Island added another layer of complexity, yet Goonyun faced it with a stoic acceptance, a hallmark of his resilient spirit.
