Roy Pryor, a proud member of the Palm Island community, has dedicated his life to enhancing the well-being of his people. Born and bred on Palm Island, Roy left for the mainland to explore various job opportunities but returned to his roots to care for his ailing grandmother. "I came back to Palm a few years ago due to my grandmother being a bit crook and stayed," he shared, highlighting the deep family ties that bind him to the island.
Roy's return to Palm Island marked the beginning of his journey with the Palm Island Community Company (PICC), an organization committed to improving the lives of community members through various programs. Joining PICC in 2011-2012, Roy witnessed its transformation over the years. "We've come a long way since then," he reflected on the organization's growth and impact on the community.
The natural beauty of Palm Island, coupled with the strong sense of community, has solidified Roy's commitment to staying. "It's pretty laid back, and a lot of my family lives here," he said, underscoring the importance of connection and belonging. Roy is not only surrounded by family but also by friends he grew up with, making the island a warm and welcoming home.
Roy's work with PICC has been instrumental in driving employment and community initiatives. "The employment is a big thing for community people to have a full-time job and get a decent wage at the end of it," he emphasized. These opportunities have empowered individuals, enabling them to contribute positively to their community.
Despite the challenges that come with community work, Roy remains hopeful and inspired by the progress made. "We've got some really, really great staff now," he noted, appreciating the collective effort of managers and staff who share a common vision.
